Emergency Kit

Stop fighting it and just accept the basic common sense of having in addition to your First Aid Kit an Emergency Kit in your car and one sitting in the back of your front hall closet as well – just in case.

Maybe you don’t happen to live in an area where hurricanes or cyclones are a threat to you. And it’s possible that the chance of having an earthquake near where you live is so remote, that it’s not even worth considering.  There are lots of other potential natural disasters to choose from. Heavy or even torrential rains can hit at any time, as can storms and floods. And if natural disaster emergencies aren’t enough, don’t forget the chances of power outages that can sometimes take days to fix.

It is always best to be prepared. And with all the talk about the 72 hours it might take for help to arrive, many people who accept the idea of having an Emergency Kit at home are probably asking what to put into it. So here are some ideas about what you need to put in a basic 72 hour (3 day) family kit.

What Goes into an Emergency Kit?

In the kit, food and water is the first priority, and for each family member, you need to provide from 8-16 ounces of water a day. You also need to be sure that the water you buy for your kit has a long shelf life. Look for 5 years and yes, water does have a shelf life. In addition, get a supply of water purification tablets.

For food for the Emergency Kit, source food bars with a 5 year shelf life, and target a minimum of 800 – 1200 calories per person per day.

For communications and light, you will need, a way to generate some light and a way to stay in touch with the rest of the world. A hand held flashlight that can be recharged by cranking is good. You also need a small radio to allow you to follow the news in your area. A mobile phone is also a necessity in this Emergency Supplies Kit. Do not forget an emergency charger for this. One more useful communication tool is an emergency whistle.

For ongoing lighting you might get an emergency candle that will last you up to 30 hours, and some other candles. You will also need a box of waterproof matches and a small plastic disposable lighter.

And of course to finish off your Emergency Kit you need a good First Aid Kit, and some toilet paper.
