History of First Aid The earliest examples of First Aid on record were by the religious knights, during the 11th century. Care was provided to pilgrims and knights, and some of the knights were trained in how to treat common battlefield injuries. This actual practice of First Aid fell in to disuse during the middle ages, and organized societies were not seen again until in 1859, when Henry Dunant organized local villagers to help victims of the local battles. In 1863, four nations met in Geneva and formed the organization which has now become the Red Cross, with the key stated aim of “aid to sick and wounded soldiers in the field”. This was followed by the formation in 1877 of the St John Ambulance. An organisation, based on the principles of the Knights Hospitaller, to teach First Aid. A number of other organization joined them, with the term First Aid first used in 1878, as ambulance services spread, as a combination of ‘first treatment’ and ‘national aid’. Many developments in First Aid and in many other medical techniques, have been driven by wars, and the military. New techniques and equipment have helped make today’s First Aid simple and effective. Virtually every one can learn to do these simple steps and procedures.
